I find it helpful to plan out my week by giving each day a “theme” or “topic.” This is a specific goal that I need to achieve, or work towards, on that day. I know I have dozens of other tasks that have to be done, and I know that I may not finish that particular theme/goal/topic. But I will dedicate the largest share of that day to completing the item, and my mind will be focused on issues regarding that item. To do this, on SmartTime I simply create an All Day Event for each goal. That way, they appear separately in the ADE pane of my Week view, as shown below.

We are extremely excited to report that SmartPlans has just been listed as “What’s Hot” on the iTunes App Store. SmartPlans follows the success of SmartNotes (#1 on productivity app in January), SmartTasks (reached #4 in February) and our flagship app SmartTime (over half a million downloads, and featured recently on the Apple Web site).

Start off by just using it as a Task Manager. Then use the Timer to time your tasks and export reports to Excel. That’s a great way to do client billing. Then start to build Plans, drop your Tasks into them, and even manage multiple Plans from the touch-and-drag Gantt Chart. And in our latest version, you can keep track of your Life Goals while you get things done. Learn more here.

Buy Now

We are pleased to announce that SmartTime 4 has been accepted by Apple and is now on the App Store. SmartTime 4 takes full advantage of the latest features of the new iOS4 including multi-tasking and the use of local notifications. This video demonstrates how you can switch instantaneously between our different SmartApps and also other apps on your iPhone.

Note SmartTime 4 is optimized for iPhones with the new iOS4 installed. If you have not yet upgraded to iOS4, you will want to keep your existing version of SmartTime.

One of the other cool features is what Apple calls “Local Notification.” This means you can set alerts locally, on your iPhone, without having to depend upon external servers to “Push” an alert to you. This is a feature that we asked for many times over the past year and we are excited that it has been implemented.

Hi everyone, we are working to make our apps compatible with the new iOS4 operating system. The next versions of SmartTime, SmartNotes, SmartPlans and SmartList will all be compatible with iOS4. We plan to submit those to the app store this week so they should be ready for you next week. Please note:

• Until we release our upgrades, the current versions of SmartTime, SmartNotes, SmartPlans and SmartList may not work on iPhones that have upgraded to iOS4. If our apps are absoutely critical to your daily work, we suggest that you do not iupgrade to iOS4 until our upgrades are available on the App Store.

• Our new versions will support iOS4 but will not support the earlier versions (OS3x and below). That means you will not be able to upgrade to the newer versions unless you have iOS4 running on your iPhones or iPod touch. Don’t worry, it’s automatic. You can keep your existing versions of our apps until you upgrade to iOS4.

• The new versions of SmartTime, SmartNotes and SmartLists will all support Apple’s new “Local Notifications” which means you will be able to create pop-up and sound alerts. For SmartNotes and SmartLists, this represents a completely new and extremely useful feature.

• We will support a direct sync between SmartTime and your existing iCal calendars on your iPhone, in a subsequent version.

SmartTime, SmartNotes, SmartLists and SmartPlans on the iPhone are combined for one beautiful organizer app on the iPad. Coming this summer.

Summer Roadmap

I just wanted to give you a heads up on what we are doing with our summer! The big push is connectivity, and the main impetus has been the release of the iPad. We are currently about half way through the code for a new iPad app that will contain the ‘best’ features of SmartTime, SmartNotes, SmartLists and SmartPlans. It will include these features from each:

SmartTime

Full Day, Week and Month calendars in both landscape and portrait views.

Combine Tasks with Events in the same view

SmartNotes

Take notes directly from any point in the app – from an appointment, from a task, or from a special notes page.

To some very interesting things with those notes – you’ll see more later!

SmartLists

Day Manager lets you change your working hours on the fly, and see how that affects how much you can get done today.

Day Manager looks at Calendar appointments, not just Tasks.

SmartPlans

Timer can track the time of anything that you do, and send out reports for billing purposes, or just to help you manage your time.

There are a lot more features than these – this is just a short list. Also, our plan is to synchronize the data seamlessly between those four iPhone apps, and the one iPad app. Data Sharing may not be available in the first release, but it is definitely on our road map and we hope to have a beta ready before School starts. If you are interested, drop us a line and we may include you in our beta testing program.

We are also working on individual iOS4 releases of the above-mentioned iPhone apps. SmartTime and SmartNotes will feature multi-tasking and Local Notifications (that’s Apple jargon for pop-up alerts without having to rely upon their server). We will also feature direct sync with the iPhone Calendar in a subsequent release.
