Hi cnjday,
Sounds like you are doing the right things. I have 4.0.1 and no problems syncing with Google. So I'm wondering if there might be something different with your data? Try this: set up a new calendar in Google. Place two events in it. Set up your sync in SmartTime to sync to only that one calendar. Let's see how that works.
By the way, we have a very small number of people who have issues with Google sync. For most people, it works fine. So it bedevils us to figure out why there are these exception cases. We are currently working on direct sync with the iPhone Calendar, which Apple made available to developers in iOS4. Our beta testers will be testing this within two weeks. We are cautiously optimistic that because we are using an Apple-enabled API, the exception cases will be minimized. On the other hand, direct sync with iPhone calendar will not be without its own peculiar issues. For example, third party apps cannot create calendars on iCal, they can only map to existing calendars. So you would have to create those calendars on iCal (on your computer), sync those down to your iPhone, then map SmartTime to those calendars. Also, the iPhone calendar has a funky way of handling time zone changes.
