What are all those ‘E’ and ‘R’ calendars, anyhow?

After synchronizing  SmartDay with iCal for the 1st time, you may notice that your iCal calendars have been divided into two separate categories in SmartDay – one with an E at the beginning and another with an R at the beginning. What’s up with that?

One of the unique features of SmartDay is the ability to create both Tasks and Events that belong to the same category. iCal does not have this feature. In iCal, you can create a calendar for events – say, “Work” – but reminders are kept in separate list categories. So, when SmartDay synchronizes with iCal for the first time, it will automatically create two calendars for each of your iCal calendars–one for your events, and one for your tasks. Using the above example, it will create one category called “(E) Work” and another called “(R) Work”. In SmartDay, you would then add new Work events to the (E) Work calendar, and new Work tasks/reminders to the (R) Work calendar. Naturally, if you add an event in SmartDay to the (R) Work calendar, that will not sync across to iCal.

If you do not wish to add SmartDay tasks to one of your iCal calendars, just delete the (R) calendar from either iCal or SmartDay. But be aware that any Tasks that you add to that category in SmartDay, will not be synchronized across to iCal – a pity!

A far more practical solution is to create a new category from within SmartDay. This will create ONE new calendar in iCal with the same name. Any tasks OR events that you add to this calendar in SmartDay will be synchronized across to iCal as either reminders, or appointments, respectively. This keeps everything in the same category. It also gives you the flexibility to convert tasks into events and vice versa on the fly. This is one of the unique features of SmartDay. For example, in the day calendar of SmartDay, you can take any task and drag it to a specific time on the timeline, to convert it into an event. Likewise, you can take any event in the day calendar, and drag it to the right hand side of that calendar, to convert it into a flexible time task.
