Performance, Sync Automation, Stability

SmartCal 3.1 has just been released. The project started off as a maintenance release to improve performance – an important requirement, because 3.0 increased the number of days that our SmartTime™ logic integrates tasks into the calendar from one day to one whole week. But then we decided to add a few more features as well. Here is the list:

• Automatically sync iPhone calendars to SmartCal
• Automatically sync SmartCal tasks to Toodledo
• Allow to sync a subset of calendars, by date (can improve performance)
• Improved performance

Perfect Pair: SmartCal and SmartPad

We also updated the icon to show how SmartCal and SmartPad are siblings with the same logic and features.  Actually, SmartPad is just the iPad version of SmartCal. Despite the similarities, we decided to make SmartPad a separate app because it takes advantage of unique features of the iPad, including larger viewing space and also a stronger processor. So SmartPad has a few more features that SmartCal does not have, including the Notes page which allows you to take notes next to any day in the calendar, then create linked appointments and follow-ups simply by highlighting a piece of text.

About Performance

SmartCal is not just a calendar. It uses logic to adaptively integrate tasks into your calendar, and to keep track of how many tasks you can accomplish, as time progresses.  These tasks can be filtered in many different (and expedient!) ways.  All of this requires constant and continuous computing. You can expect a bit of lag while all this processing goes on. This tends to happen when you create a new task, or when you change views, or when you apply a new filter. There are, however, a few things you can do to help speed things up:

  • Use the new Sync Window feature to only show a smaller subset of your Events in your calendar. Having fewer Events (or fewer Calendars) gives SmartCal less “things” to compute – and makes it faster!
  • Or, you can disable the integration feature so that tasks are not integrated into the calendar.  This still leaves you with an awesome task list, and you still enjoy the best calendar on the iPhone – the only day calendar with a drag-down month calendar!

The not-so-small print

There are just a few little nigglies remaining.  Here are a few:

• Some Recurring Events do not show correctly when one event in the group is moved.
• Can crash on start-up if user makes changes while the data is loading.
• Can crash on start-up if user does not wait several seconds after closing.
